DisplayPort Adds DockPort Extension to Royalty-Free VESA Standard

DisplayPort has been a little slow evolving but now it becomes even more robust with VESA’s (Video Electronics Standard Association) announcement that DockPort will be officially added to the existing DisplayPort standard. DockPort is the fancy name for the technology that allows for USB 3.0 data to be sent over a DisplayPort connection. This means that one standardized connector can aggregate multiple interfaces such as display, data, and power.

Previously, it was used mainly for display purposes – especially for large and multi-resolution output due to the extreme bandwidth and high speeds it offers. This includes the current holy grail of 4k resolution at 60FPS. The current estimate is for availability in Q2 of this year and are currently on display (no pun intended) at CES!
