NVIDIA Claims GTX 680 Sales 60% Higher than GTX 580

There has been a lot of speculation flying around that the shortage of NVIDIA GTX 680 & GTX 690 cards was due to yield issues of the high performance GK104 GPU. However, according to NVIDIA’s annual investors meeting, this is not so. They revealed a comparative sales chart between the GTX 580 & the new GTX 680, showing that after six weeks, the GTX 680 had sold 60% more units than its predecessor. Therefore, the shortage in the shops is simply due to the popularity of the product. Note that there are no numbers attached to the vertical axis of the graph, labelled “Units Sold Out Globally”, which makes this graph very vague, with the only certainty being that 60% difference indicated on it after six weeks. This is quite believable however, since the GTX 680 brings some significant improvements in terms of framerate, heat and noise and has had very good reviews all round. On top of this, its launch price was lower than its prime competitor, AMD’s HD 7970, which made it rather better value for money, too.

Obviously, NVIDIA would like to balance out supply with demand in order to maximise profits, but it looks like this will take some to happen. Note that there’s a typo on the chart, mislabelling both parts as “GT580” and “GT680”, respectively.
