Rumor: AMD Radeon HD 7970 To Get “GHz Edition” Makeover
It looks like AMD is tired of playing second fiddle to NVIDIA when it comes to the single-GPU crown. The rumor right now is that AMD will boost the Radeon HD 7970 from a core clock of 925MHz to 1GHz and will launch them as “GHz Edition” cards. This would result in one graphics card from each price segment having the GHz Edition moniker: The HD 7770, HD 7870, and now HD 7970. The only lingering question is why didn’t AMD release the GPU at 1GHz to begin with, and supposedly that is due to yields. As it stands, things have greatly improved. It now takes less voltage for AMD to hit 925MHz on the Radeon HD 7970 then it did previously, and with the cards able to regularly clock past 1.2GHz it seems the time is right to push the stock performance a bit higher in order to better compete against the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680.
That’s right, AMD are going to boost their reference core clock from 925MHz to 1GHz in order to contend for the single GPU crown. Of course there are already cards shipping with around 1050MHz core clock, and those cards are indeed faster than a reference GTX 680 in some tests, though AMD prefer to make things official.
