Target To Stop Selling Amazon Kindles

By

Target announced this week that they are phasing out Amazon.com’s e-reader Kindle from its stores and websites. Target says the decision to halt the Kindle sales came after an “ongoing review” of their products and merchandise. Of course many are skeptical because of Target’s new partnership with Apple Computer, Inc. to create “mini shops” in selected Target stores later this year. Target has plans to stop selling Kindle accessories such as covers and chargers as well. Time will tell if the loss of Target’s “Best Selling” Tablet series will affect their bottom line or the addition giant Apple will attract the waves of customers they are anticipating.

Target would not comment on the reason for the Kindle’s elimination, saying only “we typically don’t discuss our relationships with vendor partners.” Amazon did not immediately reply to a request for comment. The Kindle was an apparent hit for Target: The company said last year that the just-launched Kindle Fire was Target’s bestselling tablet on Black Friday. Target will still sell other e-readers, including the Barnes and Noble Nook, Snyder said.
