Gigabyte Makes Building a Hackintosh Easier Than Ever

By

For those that prefer to build their Apple Macs, rather than buy whatever Apple decides to flog them, there’s some good news. Building a Hackintosh is now easier than ever, thanks to Gigabyte’s new UEFI implementation, since this improves Mac OS X support dramatically, making them the best around for this. Using one of these motherboards, a hackintosh builder can do away with the tricky Differentiated System Description Table (DSDT) which describes what hardware the OS is running on. Normally OS X would kernel panic and die without it, but Gigabyte’s UEFI prevents this happening. Also, importantly, sleep and wake functionality works straight out of the box. All this is especially good news for OS X fans, because Apple is rumoured to be phasing out its high end Mac Pro and other desktops, leaving this as the only way to run their OS on a high end computer.

Apple is notoriously unhappy about the existence of hackintoshes (witness the gruesome fate of Psystar at the hands of their lawyers) so this improved hackintosh capability must be making Apple seeth with anger. Admittedly not all is rosy for Gigabyte either, as the VIA audio chips are poorly supported under OS X and only a few limited models features Realtek audio which has much better support by Apple’s OS.
