Skype 1.0 Released for Windows Phone

By

Microsoft has released version 1.0 of Skype for Windows Phone, making it available in the Windows Phone Marketplace. It’s a free 6MB app, which replaces the beta version, runs on Windows Phone 7.5 and up and works over Wi-Fi or 3G. On the plus side, the app adds the ability to search for and add new contacts. However, there’s a big downer: no background mode. This means that the Skype app has to be open and the user in it. This seems to be a bit of a deal-breaker, so we await a fix for this in the next version. Finally, Microsoft is looking to more tightly integrate Skype with Windows Phone 8.0, so let’s hope that background mode is enabled for that version.

Of course users will still be disappointed with no background functionality, making the service still a bit of a novelty for most people. Not being able to receive calls in the background is a bit of a deal killer, especially when rival service Tango Video Call is out on the market allowing this functionality (the latter also has better video quality for us).
