Glasses-Free 3D Prototype Display Looks Fantastic and Has Wide Viewing Angles

By

At NAB, The Verge saw a new 3D prototype display, a joint venture between Dolby and Philips. They were impressed with it display quality and clarity, which was very high and allowed 3D viewing even from far off to the side. The prototype display produced a 3D picture by combining a quad-HD TV with a sheet of undulating plastic, which produced 3D at 26 different points around the display. This display isn’t quite ready for prime time, because the price of such high resolution displays is still very high. Also, a good quality 3D effect will be harder to achieve on smaller displays, because the extremely high resolution required won’t be available on them. A release date of “2013” was mooted a couple of times.

Dolby was also showing its 3D tech on a handful of smartphones and tablets, along with Dolby software that allows you to control the depth of the 3D effect; what looks good from ten feet away can overwhelm your eyes from one foot while you hold your phone, and in the company’s demo being able to scale back the effect made a huge difference in comfort.
