G-Technology’s 8TB RAID 0 External Drive With Thunderbolt Connection Now Shipping

By

G-Technology’s new external drive, aimed at professional video editors, is now shipping. It contains two 4TB 7200RPM Hitachi Deskstar hard disc drives in RAID 0 and connects to an Apple Mac or PC via a 10Gbps Thunderbolt connection, developed by Intel. At the moment, only Apple Macs currently support this interface, however it will be appearing on future PC motherboards.

The case is made of solid aluminium, has a fan for cooling the HDDs and features a Kensington lock to prevent the drive walking away from the office. The suggested retail price for this drive is $1000, the 6TB one is $850 and the 4TB one is $700. Note that RAID 0 is inherently less reliable than a single drive, so an up-to-date backup of this drive should be considered even more essential than usual.

The drive is meant for professional video editors who are on the go and need to work with large files yet need the fast processing speeds. It has two Thunderbolt ports and allows daisy-chaining of as many as six Thunderbolt-compatible peripherals. It can support speeds of up to 280MBps for compressed HD video files such as Redcode, DVCPro HD, XDCAM HD, and Apple’s ProRes 422.
