Microsoft’s Next-Generation XBOX Has No Disc Drive

By

Microsoft’s next-generation XBOX, codenamed “Durango”, is expected to launch sometime next year. A source within Microsoft has stated the game console will no longer feature a disc drive, instead for non-digital purchases console will use NAND flash-based solutions for storing content; whether or not it will be a proprietary design is currently unknown. No exact release date has been stated, but there are rumors that Microsoft will show off the new XBOX at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in May. Considering the extensiveness of Microsoft’s XBOX Live service, its no surprise they are considering this approach. Digital distribution appears to be the way of the future, and Microsoft seems to be embracing it without reservation.

The lack of a disc drive is not hugely surprising – Microsoft already sells a huge amount of games via its Xbox Live internet service, and offers web-TV and downloadable films via services built into Xbox Live.
