Could SOPA Be Dead? Lamar Smith Pulls Bill

By

Well, this was a bit unexpected. It is being reported that Lamar Smith, the chief sponsor of SOPA, said on Friday that he is pulling the bill until there is wider agreement on a solution. This is a huge win for those that don’t want their internet freedoms infringed upon, but with politicians who knows what will end up happening. This is likely the result of a massive outpouring of opposition against the bill in recent days, with some even calling it unconstitutional. Protests on the Internet raised awareness, with Twitter clocking in some 3.9M Tweets about it in one day this week. We hope that Lamar Smith decides to postpone SOPA ‘indefinitely’ and that this will be the last that we have to write about it!

It is clear that we need to revisit the approach on how best to address the problem of foreign thieves that steal and sell American inventions and products.
