Sharp Unveils World’s First 8K Super Hi-Vision 85-Inch LCD UHDTV at CES 2012

With 16 times the resolution of currently available full HD displays – that’s right, 16 times! – Sharp’s amazing 85-inch Super Hi-Vision television (Ultra High Definition – UHDTV) can truly take your breath away with it’s near perfect image quality. With the resolution coming in at an astounding 7680 x 4320 pixels (10 bits per pixel), an uncompressed 30-minute broadcast would require about 6TB of data. The aspect ratio remains the same as with HDTV (16:9), but the framerate is set at a 60p format, while HDTV uses 24p, 30p or 60i. Out with the standard 7.1 surround sound as well. The UHDTV format supports up to a completely immersive 22.2 multichannel sound system, which was developed by NHK.

Don’t plan to rush out to buy one just yet, as these won’t be available until sometime between 2020 and 2025. Current available broadcasters do not broadcast in anything near this resolution at this time. Also media such as Blu-Ray discs only have the capacity to store 7.5 seconds (single layer) of uncompressed UHDTV data.
