UK Broadband Receives More Funding
UK Chancellor George Osborne announced that he’ll spend 5bn on infrastructure projects including Roads, railways, and the UK’s broadband networks. Of that, 100m ($156m) is going to fund the boosted broadband coverage in London, Belfast, Edinburgh, and Cardiff and six additional cities. The goal is to create a hub of cities connected to broadband speeds between 80 to 100Mbps to promote business. The current average rests at 6.8 Mbps, firms like BT and Virgin will bid for the money to be used on Urban hotspots and wi-fi coverage.
However some critics believe that the money would be better spent increasing broadband access in rural regions. BT increased the super fast broadband roll out and intends to offer fiber services to two thirds of the UK by the end of 2014, but broadband has been far slower in rural areas inciting the criticisms.
“It means creating new superfast digital networks for companies across our country. These do not exist today. See what countries like China or Brazil are building, and you’ll also see why we risk falling behind the rest of the world,” he said. “Our great cities are at the heart of our regional economies. And we will help bring world leading, superfast broadband and wi-fi connections to 10 of them – including the capitals of all four nations.”
