Sony Recalls 1.6 Million Bravia LCD HDTV Sets Due To Fire Hazard

Sony has recalled 1.6 million 40-inch Bravia flat-panel LCD HDTVs that sold worldwide since 2007 because a faulty component may cause them to melt or catch fire. The liquid-crystal display TVs were recalled after a September incident in which a customer noticed a small fire and smoke, said Yuki Shima, a Tokyo-based spokeswoman for the worlds third-largest maker of televisions. Eleven incidents have been reported in Japan since 2008, according to a company statement. The impacted models are KDL-40V3000, KDL-40VL130, KDL-40W3000, KDL-40WL135, KDL-40XBR4, and KDL-40XBR5. Beginning immediately, Sony offers all customers of the affected models [KDL-40V3000, KDL-40VL130, KDL-40W3000, KDL-40WL135, KDL-40XBR4, and KDL-40XBR5] a free evaluation for the covered product.
