Did Apple Employees Impersonate Police in Search For Lost iPhone?

By

We reported yesterday that an Apple employee purportedly lost (some are calling it a publicity stunt) a prototype iPhone for the second time in as many years. Now, reports are saying that the police were not involved in the questioning and search of a SF man’s apartment but rather it was a group of Apple employees masquerading as police. If this turns out to be true, it could severely damage Apple’s reputation. Much of this is based on claims from the man on which the investigation centered so the information could very well be embellished or fabricated. Either way, it will be interesting to see where this lands – especially with the recent departure of Steve Jobs.
**Update, the SF Weekly has confirmed that the police did assist in the investigation.**

Lost iPhone

[Sergio] Caldern said that at about 6 p.m. six people — four men and two women — wearing badges of some kind showed up at his door. “They said, ‘Hey, Sergio, we’re from the San Francisco Police Department.'” He said they asked him whether he had been at Cava 22 over the weekend (he had) and told him that they had traced a lost iPhone to his home using GPS. At no point, he said, did any of the visitors say they were working on behalf of Apple or say they were looking for an iPhone 5 prototype.
