T-Mobile Unveils New Unlimited Data Plans – They Really Mean Metered Plans

By

T-Mobile today announced new Value plans, but after reading the press release twice it looks like they have announced metered plans! The press release states that the new Value plans offer single-line and multiline options with a range of price points for talk, unlimited text and unlimited data at 3G or 4G speeds with 2 GB, 5 GB or 10 GB of high-speed data with no data overage charges. What happens if you go over the data plan you signed up for? Well, your data speeds are reduced from 4G/3G speeds to just 2G speeds and they won’t make you pay for any of the data you pull from the 2G metered speeds. So, what will these new ‘unlimited’ plans cost you?

  • 200 MB for $15 USD/month
  • 2 GB for $20 USD/month
  • 5 GB per month allowance for $30 USD/month
  • 10 GB allowance for $60 USD/month.

It looks like some users might save money, but for those that use a bunch of bandwidth it might mean that you’ll be spending some time at the end of the month crawling along at 2G speeds. The bright side of T-Mobiles throttling system is a guarantee of zero data overage charges.
