Apple internally plans to take deliveries of 6-6.5 million iPads, including iPad 2, in the first quarter of 2011 and aims at a total shipment volume of 40 million iPads for 2011, according to sources from the supply chain. 300,000-400,000 units of iPad 2 will be turned out in the initial batch, the sources pointed out.

The sources noted that Apple ordered about 1.7-2 million iPads each month in January and February and order volumes, including iPad 2, in March are expected to rise to over two million units. The sources pointed out that there were about 1-1.5 million units worth of iPad inventory in the channel in January and since Apple only ordered about 1.8-2 million iPads in January, it indicates that Apple is already set to phase out the first-generation iPad and let iPad 2 take its place. However, if iPad 2’s mass production does not go as expected, the channel may face strong inventory pressure.
