Nvidia Calls Intel's Graphics Chip Tactics 'Aggressive'
Now that AMD and Intel have made amends, Nvidia is making some noise about Intel's perceived quest for graphics chip domination.

Advanced Micro Devices is not the only large Intel competitor to rail against Intel's alleged strong-arm tactics. Nvidia has also complained loudly for years about Intel business practices in the graphics chip market, where Intel commands about 50 percent of the market. Nvidia is the world's leading supplier of "discrete," or standalone, graphics chips but takes a distant second place in overall market share to Intel, which supplies "integrated" graphics built into the chipsets that accompany all of its processors. Mercury Research estimates the total market for graphics chips, including integrated graphics, at almost $10 billion in 2009.

Psystar Loses Infringement Case to Apple
Apple has been in some long running litigation against Psystar for various indescretions against Apple policy for use of their OS. I'm sure there will be more to come on this one.
Apple's won its copyright infringement claim against would-be Mac cloner Psystar in California. Anyone surprised? As we've been saying all along, the key argument wasn't the OS X EULA or Psystar's failed monopoly claims, but pure, simple copyright infringement, since Psystar was illegally copying, modifying, and distributing Apple's code. Psystar was also dinged for circumventing Apple's kernel encryption in violation of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, but that's just another nail in the coffin, really.

Hackers bypass Windows 7 activation
Hackers have managed to find a way around one of the key antipiracy protections built into Windows 7. Ordinarily, the operating system requires users to activate their copy of Windows 7 within 30 days. However, a recently outlined method allows the normal notifications to be turned off.

The software doesn't actually get confirmed as legitimate, but users are able to keep using the product indefinitely. Microsoft confirmed on Friday it is aware of the technique, but said that it is working to shore up the activation procedure.

Upcoming DirectX 11 Game Titles To Include Battlefield: Bad Company 2
AMD just sent over a list of DirectX 11 game titles and when their expected release dates are going to be. It looks like DirectX 11 is finally starting to pick up some speed, which is great news for ATI Radeon HD 5000 video card series owners as you have a card supporting DX11. A new name has appeared on the DX11 game list and that would be Battlefield: Bad Company 2! This is a big title game, so that should help boost sales for AMD. DiRT 2 is coming out on December 1st, so it looks like DirectX 11 is about to get a shot in the arm with these major game titles. NVIDIA's GT300 'Fermi' graphics solution for DirectX 11 is missing in action and is rumored to not be coming out in volume until April 2010. If that is the case AMD has a six month head start on DX11!

DirectX 11 is a key feature of Windows 7 and is important for two key reasons: it helps consumers experience better performing games and faster computing. To do this, DirectX 11 brings several new features which collectively improve the graphic fidelity of games and 3D applications while also enhancing the ability of the CPU and GPU to work together more efficiently. This in turn will allow end-users to potentially realize significant increases in performance as application developers harness the power of tessellation, multi-threading and compute shader technology, three key new features of DirectX 11.

Intel/AMD deal could help solve virtualization compatibility problems
The $1.25 billion Intel/AMD settlement announced Thursday could improve competition in the server hardware market and solve some lingering problems related to server virtualization, analysts say. Today, a virtualization technology known as live migration lets customers move workloads from one physical server to another, but only if both servers contain processors from the same chip maker, according to Forrester analyst James Staten.
Gartner analyst Martin Reynolds agrees the Intel/AMD settlement could be good news for virtualization customers. "If they were to integrate virtualization more deeply into the processors as a single standard that companies use, it's possible virtualization could become less expensive," Reynolds says. The virtualization incompatibility has mainly harmed AMD, because the issue forces customers to standardize on one type of server and Intel has a dominant market share, according to Staten. In the wake of the settlement, there are several other potential areas for new levels of compatibility between Intel and AMD processors, Staten says, including memory and power management, and security.

Microsoft probing Windows 7 zero-day security hole
Microsoft said on Wednesday it is looking into a report of a vulnerability in Windows 7 and Server 2008 Release 2 that could be used by an attacker to remotely crash the computer. The company is investigating claims of a "possible denial-of-service vulnerability in Windows Server Message Block (SMB)," the Microsoft spokesperson said, adding that the company was unaware of any attacks trying to exploit the hole.

The bug triggers an infinite loop on the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol used for sharing files in Windows, researcher Laurent Gaffié wrote in a posting on the Full-Disclosure mailing list and on a blog. "Whatever your firewall is set to, you can get remotely smashed via IE or even via some broadcasting NBNS [NetBIOS Naming Service] tricks," Gaffié wrote.

Activision says Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 sets launch record
Activision Blizzard Inc said it sold 4.7 million copies of "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" for $310 million on its first day, setting a new record for the video game industry. The shooting game went on sale on Tuesday in the most highly anticipated debut of the year. Fans had lined up for hours outside retail stores like GameStop in advance of the midnight release. The previous record for the biggest video game launch was last year's "Grand Theft Auto IV" from Take-Two Interactive Software Inc, which sold 3.6 million units or $310 million on the first day.

Analysts projected unit sales of 11 million to 13 million by the end of 2009, saying "Call of Duty" would defy the weak economy because it appeals to hard-core gamers willing to shell out $60 for the title. Estimates for launch-day sales ranged from $300 million to $340 million.

Massive and comScore Team Up To Show In-Game Ad Performance
Microsoft’s Massive division and market researcher comScore have teamed up to statistically show how effective in-game advertisements are doing. Today, Massive and web market researcher comScore have figured out how to connect the ads that consumers see in games with the actions they take to buy or view products and services afterward. Basically, the two companies share data on consumers, but they do so without violating privacy policies. comScore and Massive have submitted this new methodology to the Advertising Research Foundation for validation.

AdEffx Action Lift for Gaming matches in-game console ad serving data from Massive with comScore's third-party, post-campaign panel data to track and measure in-game advertising effectiveness. By combining Microsoft's proprietary, non-personally identifying Anonymous ID data, which is common across Xbox LIVE and Microsoft Web properties (known as Windows Live ID), with user data from comScore's panel of 2 million Internet users worldwide, comScore can determine if panelists who saw in-game advertising subsequently visited a brand's Web site, searched brand-related terms or engaged in other online behaviors important to advertisers.

Nvidia sees strong demand, but faces supply constraints
Graphics chipmaker Nvidia Corp is seeing strong demand for its products, helped by a recovery in the global economy, its chief executive said on Wednesday. "We have supply constraints across board," Jen-Hsun Huang told reporters in the Indian city of Bangalore. Nvidia last week forecast fourth quarter revenue to be up about 2 percent from the third quarter, well above Wall Street expectations, and said its new server and mobile chips were gaining momentum.

And the reason for that is demand just spiked up very, very quickly and we are seeing robust demand across the board." He said the company was seeing recovery from all geographies, including U.S. and Europe.

Adesso CyberTablet 6400 Review @ OCModShop and other reviews from around the web can be found by visiting our forums!
As a graphic artist, I am familiar with digital graphics tablets. Most digital artists are familiar with Wacom products, but they tend to be very pricey. The price point of a tablet has a bit of "snob" factor to it, as professional tablets start around $350 and "lesser" entry-level tablets can be had for under $100. When I saw the Adesso CyberTablet 6400, I really didn't have a lot of high hopes, given its $70 price point. I was soon flogging myself for having such negative thoughts, because the tablet ended up having the same smooth operation and functionality as one of my entry-level Wacom tablets.

Microsoft on Tuesday issued six security bulletins fixing 15 vulnerabilities, including a critical patch for holes in the Windows kernel and other Windows and Office components that could allow an attacker to take control of a computer. "MS09-065, a bug in the Windows kernel, is this month's most serious issue," said Andrew Storms, director of security operations at nCircle. "The vulnerability allows for remote code execution, and the attack code can be embedded inside MS Office files or be hosted on websites. Simply browsing an infected website will compromise unsuspecting users -- not great for all the holiday shoppers looking to get a jump on their shopping. The novelty value of this bug is likely to attract many researchers. A lot of people will try to be the first to publicly post exploit code."

The card tested today with its excellent heatpipe cooler and stellar overclocking performance should be considered over paying $50 more for a different name brand built off the same reference design."

NVIDIA GT300 'Fermi' Graphics Card Delayed till April 2010
Nvidia's decision to push back the launch of its next-generation flagship GT300 (Fermi) GPU to the first quarter of fiscal 2011 (January 26-April 26, 2010) is unlikely to affect the company's performance for the remaining part of 2009, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

Nvidia will ramp Fermi for three different product lines: GeForce, Quadro and Tesla in the first quarter of fiscal 2011, said Jen-Hsun Huang, CEO of Nvidia, during a recent conference call with financial analysts. Huang's statement means that Nvidia will only be able to start shipping its Fermi-based GPUs in 2010, instead of the end of 2009 as originally planned, the sources pointed out.

Facebook Add Scams in Games
If you have a kid that will do anything to get that extra little bit of in-game cash to buy items, then you might want to look at this and have a talk with them and go over what information they give out and how.
These offers, generally known in the business as lead-gen (lead generators), will give you some seed/tractor money in return for signing up for, say, a subscription to Netflix or a credit card. But less scrupulous advertisers lure players in with an offer to take a bogus survey or IQ test. Once it's completed they require a cell-phone number to send you the results. When you enter your cell number and create a password, you have unwittingly subscribed to a service you never wanted but will be billed for.
