Microsoft Claims Sales of 4m Copies of Windows 8 So Far

Despite the apparent general lack of interest for Windows 8 and PC suppliers worried that it won't generate enough sales for them, it appears that sales of the operating system have gotten off to a good start since Friday - if you believe Microsoft. CEO Steve Ballmer announced this at Microsoft's Build conference, host to over 2000 developers.

Ballmer played up the advantage of such great sales to developers in terms of a wide userbase, "In a sense, what these launches really do is the kick off the golden age of opportunity for you as developers". He continued, saying that "Windows 8 is the best opportunity for software development today. Hundreds of millions of people are aching to use your apps, just dying to use your application". Oh wow, great stuff! Let's see how popular Windows 8 turns out to be in the long run. The Windows Store currently has 120,000 apps, compared to Apple's and Google's store, which both have more than 700,000 apps each, which isn't a bad start. Ballmer also said that Microsoft will launch a Twitter app in the next few months.

"I think we're going to see a lot of growth and vitality and explosion in the PC market," Ballmer stressed. "This is a market in which you can do your best work, your most innovative work.... This is a market in which you can make money." Microsoft is expected to invest $1.5 billion in advertising alone for Windows 8. It'll also offer free Wi-Fi for popular U.S. states in order to generate a buzz for the operating system and ultimately raise awareness among consumers.
