Google Unveils RoboHornet Browser Benchmark, Tests More Than Just JavaScript

It seems Google is on a benchmark kick, having recently released the Octane JavaScript benchmark. They have now moved on to RoboHornet. RoboHornet is a general purpose web browser speed test which should help showcase something other than just JavaScript performance. The RoboHornet project leader, Alex Komoroske, said "It's a living, dynamic benchmark that aims to use the collective efforts of the Web development community and ultimately get browser vendors to fix real-world performance pain points," in his blog post. With that said, currently RoboHornet is an open-source project on GitHub with Google seeking out involvement from others. So far Google staff, which included Paul Lewis and Erik Arvidsson, have written code for the benchmark but that doesn't mean its a pro-Chrome and Google test, far from it in fact as the RoboHornet committee includes members from Mozilla, Facebook, Microsoft and Sencha to name a few. So if you want to see where your browser's performance is weakest, head on over to the RoboHornet site and give the Alpha version of the benchmark a shot.

Improving Web performance is important. For one thing, people spend a lot of time in their browsers, and they tend to be more active when Web sites are responsive. For companies like Google, that means more searches, more search advertising opportunities, and therefore more revenue.
