Sony Backs Out Of Optical Disc Drive Market

With competition being as fierce as it is in the optical disc drive market, Sony has decided to close up shop. With prices dropping to extreme lows Sony announced that it will cease production of it's disc drives for PCs starting in November. The news gets worse, however, with Sony Opitarc Inc., which is a subsidiary based in Atsugi, Kanagawa Prefecture, halting all operations in March, with the company being liquidated sometime after. It's not all bad news though, as Sony plans to offer early retirement to some 400 employees with others being transferred to various positions in the group both in Japan and overseas. It just goes to show that even a juggernaut in the industry can be forced out by fierce competition. How this will impact the optical disc drive market as a whole remains in question.

Sony Corp. will discontinue manufacturing optical disc drives for personal computers in November amid fierce competition that has forced prices lower, company officials said Saturday.
