Cooler Master Silent Pro M2 1500W PSU Review

Testing results (Efficiency, Noise & Thermal)

The efficiency of the Cooler Master
Silent Pro M2 1500W unit does comply with the 80Plus Silver certification,
reaching nearly 90% at 50% load when the unit is powered from a 230V A/C power
source. The unit however cannot maintain an efficiency that high at lower and
or higher loads, although the efficiency will always remain above 85% across
the entire load range.

Regardless of the 80Plus Silver
certification and the good efficiency ratings of the unit, the extreme power
output of the Silent Pro M2 1500W unit leads to the generation of significant
levels of heat. This was to be expected from a power supply with that kind of
power, as the units thermal losses are well over 250W at maximum load!

The broad capacity translates to a
broad fan speed range as well. The fan spins very slowly while the unit is at
minimum load and gradually speeds up as the load increases, though the unit becomes
clearly audible only when the load reaches 60%, which already is 900W worth of
power! However, the slope of the graph increases significantly beyond that
point and the Silent Pro M2 ceases to be anything near silent at 80% load. At
maximum load, the noise level is even equivalent to that of a small cars radiator
fan.
