AMD Radeon RX 470 and Radeon RX 460 Graphics Cards Announced
AMD today showed off three video cards based on the brand new Polaris architecture built using the 14nm FinFET manufacturing process at the PC Gaming Show that was hosted at the E3 Expo. We all knew about the AMD Radeon RX 480 graphics card that will be available for as little as $199 for a 4GB version and slight more for an 8GB version (we are guessing $250). Both Radeon RX 480 models should be available when they are released on June 29th.
The AMD Radeon RX 480 uses the Polaris 10 GPU and is rated at having over 5 TFLOPS of compute power in a 150W TDP power envelope! This card uses a fully featured Polaris 10 GPU that has 36 Compute Units for a grand total of 2,304 stream processors if AMD is sticking with the usual 64 stream processors per CU design that they have been using with Graphics Core Next (GCN) technology for years. The card uses old school GDDR5 memory to help keep costs down, but it appears to be well optimized as they are able to get 256 GB/s of bandwidth using just a 256-bit wide bus.
All this horsepower lets the AMD Radeon RX 480 will run the latest DX12 game titles at 1440p resolutions without issue and support Virtual Reality on the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive VR headsets. That is big news as never before could a $199 video card give you a good VR gaming experience. This card will allow you to lower the entry price for a solid gaming rig that can handle VR. The cards all digital video outputs support DisplayPort 1.3/1.4 HDR and HDMI 2.0 connections, so while AMD is future proofing the video outputs it may also mean that some folks might be forced to upgrade their monitors.
The big news today is that the AMD Radeon RX 470 and the Radeon RX 460 will be joining the Radeon RX 480 lineup! The AMD Radeon RX 470 4GB GDDR5 video card uses the same Polaris 10 GPU that the Radeon RX 480 uses but with a lower 110W TDP and is aimed at 1080p high-definition gamers. This card will likely be comparable to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 or GTX 950 and be priced down in the $139 to $159 price range since the Radeon RX 480 4GB card is going to have an SRP of $199.
The AMD Radeon RX 460 likely uses the Polaris 11 GPU, has a TDP of under 75W and is targeted at those playing MMO game titles that are typically not too graphics intensive! AMD chief executive Lisa Su said that the Radeon RX 460 would be a small, compact, low power, high yield graphics card! Could this be card be priced in the $95 to $119 price range and compete with the GeForce GTX 750 Ti or maybe even the GeForce GTX 950?
It looks like AMD is going to have some new cards for us all to enjoy this summer and we really look forward to getting some samples to benchmark!
